Climate change heats up in Australia
Climate change is a global issue, though one that's perhaps more prevalent in Australia than anywhere else in the world.
Our thin and depleting ozone layer offers little protection from the sun, meaning UV radiation commonly beams down on our properties. The damaging effects of the sun become noticeable in a poly water tank, with high-quality models having a distinct edge over ones that can't match the fierce Aussie climate.
The issue becomes more pressing when we consider CSIRO's most recent State of the Climate Report.
CSIRO's researchers found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, Australia has been heating up. Of all the warmest years on record, seven of the 10 have occurred since 1998.
The sun's intensity also causes a greater risk of drought, as more water is evaporated from reservoirs and other non-enclosed water-storage areas. It's another reason why Australians commonly buy poly water tanks for their properties, to provide extra resources should the drier months add too much pressure on the water system.
In spite of this, climate change is actually bringing more rainfall for some parts of Australia, providing opportunities for homes and businesses to capture more water for the tougher times during the year.
CSIRO found that average annual rainfall across the country has increased since records began in 1900. However, it's not all good news; recently, parts of Western Australia, New South Wales and Victoria have had the lowest amounts of rainfall on record.
"Since 1970 there has been a 17 per cent decline in average winter rainfall in the southwest of Australia," the report read.
"The southeast has experienced a 15 per cent decline in late autumn and early winter rainfall since the mid-1990s, with a 25 per cent reduction in average rainfall across April and May."
